Introduction

Dubai, recognized as a leading city for driving experiences, is taking significant steps towards promoting eco-friendly transportation. The city plans to enhance its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, further advancing its reputation as a world-class driving destination. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), a driving force behind the emirate’s clean energy transition, aims to expand the network of public charging stations by 170% within the next three years. This ambitious initiative aligns with Dubai’s vision of becoming a global green-economy hub, as outlined in the Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050.

Expanding Dubai’s Electric Vehicle Mobility

DEWA is committed to transforming Dubai’s electric mobility landscape by installing an additional 630 Green Charging Stations, bringing the total to 1,000 stations by 2025. This substantial growth will provide residents and visitors with increased access to EV charging, encouraging the adoption of sustainable transportation and supporting Dubai’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions. DEWA’s initiatives are in line with the broader goal of generating 100% of Dubai’s power from clean energy sources by 2050, as envisioned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Dubai’s Commitment to Green Transportation

Dubai is firmly dedicated to promoting green mobility, as demonstrated by the comprehensive measures implemented by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The RTA has developed a long-term strategy to transition to net-zero emission public transport by 2050, a crucial step in reducing the city’s environmental impact and establishing Dubai as a global leader in eco-friendly transportation.

Rapid Growth of Electric Vehicles in Dubai

DEWA’s efforts to encourage electric vehicle adoption have yielded impressive results. Since the launch of the EV Green Charger Initiative in 2015, the number of registered electric vehicles in Dubai has surged from a mere 14 to over 11,000 as of May 2023, with expectations of further growth in the near future. Dubai aims to have more than 42,000 electric cars on its roads by 2030, underscoring the emirate’s commitment to sustainable transportation and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

DEWA’s Vision for a Greener Future

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, emphasizes that green mobility is the way forward. DEWA envisions the creation of accessible and world-class infrastructure to support the widespread adoption of eco-friendly transportation options. Through the EV Green Charger Initiative, DEWA not only aims to reduce carbon emissions but also promotes sustainable practices throughout Dubai.

Meeting Growing Demand with Expanded Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

To accommodate the increasing demand for EV charging infrastructure, DEWA has already deployed over 370 charging stations across Dubai. These stations offer a range of charging options, including ultra-fast chargers, fast chargers, direct current chargers, public parking chargers, and wall chargers. Conveniently located at key destinations such as fuel stations, public parks, customer happiness centers, and shopping centers, these charging stations ensure easy access for electric vehicle owners.

Embracing Eco-Friendly Practices

DEWA has simplified the process of obtaining the Electrical Vehicle Green Charger card, necessary for utilizing the EV charging stations. Users can easily create an EV account through DEWA’s website, smart app, or customer care center. The user-friendly EV Green Charger Dashboard provides a convenient platform for managing charging services, making payments, tracking consumption data, and locating the nearest charging station.

Conclusion

Dubai’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle charging infrastructure demonstrates its dedication to green mobility and sustainable development. With DEWA’s ambitious plan to establish a robust network of charging stations, Dubai is well-positioned to become a leader in eco-friendly transportation. By embracing electric vehicles and sustainable practices, Dubai is paving the way for a greener future while solidifying its status as a global city at the forefront of sustainable urban living.
