Dubai, a global city known for its remarkable infrastructure and efficient transportation networks, has emerged as one of the world’s least congested cities, as indicated by a recent report from navigation technology company TomTom.

Impressive Traffic Flow Index Rankings

In the 2022 traffic index report by TomTom, which meticulously analyzed data from 390 cities across 56 countries covering over 543 billion kilo-meters of road networks, Dubai showcased outstanding rankings in the traffic flow index.

Beating Global Cities in Travel Time

The report highlighted Dubai’s superior performance in terms of travel time within the Central Business District (CBD). The city surpassed major global counterparts like Los Angeles, Montreal, Sydney, Berlin, Rome, and Milan, boasting an average journey time of just 12 minutes per 10 km. This significantly outperformed the average of 21 minutes per 10 km in the mentioned cities.

Comparative Insights

While the Netherlands’ Almere secured the top spot in this index with an impressive 8 minutes per 10 km, London was at the other end of the spectrum with a time of 36 minutes per 10 km.

Urban Area Excellence

Dubai’s prowess extended to urban areas as well. With a travel time of 9 minutes per 10 km and an average speed of 59 km/h, the city’s efficient traffic management earned it a notable position in the global ranking. The best-performing city in this category was Greensboro in the US, clocking in at 7 minutes and 40 seconds per 10 km with an average speed of 74 km/h.

Infrastructure Evolution

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), acknowledged the extensive efforts put into enhancing Dubai’s infrastructure. The development of landmark projects such as the Dubai Metro and the Dubai Tram, along with an extensive road network expansion, has propelled the city’s traffic management and overall transportation.

Public Transport Triumph

The RTA’s dedication to creating an integrated public transport network has significantly impacted Dubai’s traffic dynamics. With the cumulative value of time and fuel savings exceeding AED 262 billion ($71.3 billion) between 2006 and 2022, the city’s economy and society have reaped substantial benefits. Furthermore, the collaborative efforts of the RTA and Dubai Police have resulted in a significant reduction in road incident-related fatalities from 22 cases per 100,000 of the population in 2006 to 1.9 cases in 2022.

Dubai becoming the least congested city around the globe

Dubai’s relentless commitment to enhancing its transportation infrastructure, coupled with a visionary public transport network, has not only positioned the city as a global leader in traffic management but has also positively influenced its economy, society, and overall quality of life.
