In a swift response to the rising tensions in the Middle East, Emirates Airlines has imposed new restrictions on what passengers can carry in their luggage. The airline, known for being the largest carrier in the Middle East, has announced a ban on two specific items—electronic pagers and walkie-talkies—for all flights “to, from, or via Dubai.” This decision follows recent device explosions in Lebanon and Syria, increasing concerns about safety during air travel.

Why Are These Items Banned?

Following the deadly explosions in September 2024, which involved electronic pagers used by Hezbollah for communication, the Lebanese authorities introduced immediate restrictions. These explosions, which resulted in the loss of 37 lives and injuries to over 3,000 people, have heightened safety protocols across the region. While no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, it has caused concern for airlines operating in and around Lebanon and Syria.

Emirates Airlines, prioritizing passenger safety, has acted swiftly in banning pagers and walkie-talkies, citing concerns over their potential danger in flight. Any such items discovered in passengers’ hand or checked luggage will be confiscated by Dubai Police, according to the airline’s latest statement.

Flight Suspensions and Regional Impact

In addition to banning these electronic devices, Emirates has also suspended flights to several high-risk destinations. Although flights to Amman, Jordan, resumed on October 6, services to Iraq, Iran, and Lebanon remain suspended amid ongoing missile strikes in these regions. The airline emphasized that it is working closely with relevant authorities to monitor the evolving situation.

Travelers planning trips to Qatar, Oman, and the UAE should also be cautious, as tensions between Israel and Lebanon could escalate quickly. The UK Foreign Office has issued warnings for tourists visiting the wider region, urging travelers to stay updated on current events.

Travel Tips for Emirates Passengers

To avoid disruption during your travels, it is essential to comply with the airline’s latest restrictions. Ensure that no banned items, including pagers and walkie-talkies, are packed in your hand or checked luggage. Always stay informed about your destination’s current situation and check for updates from Emirates and other authorities before you travel.

These precautions are part of a larger effort to ensure the safety of both passengers and crew amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
