Dubai, UAE – The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) convened its 77th meeting, led by HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, to assess the performance of the Building Retrofit Program in Dubai. The meeting, attended by prominent council members and officials, focused on the program’s accomplishments and its contributions to reducing water and electricity consumption in the city.
One of the main agenda items was the discussion of the Building Retrofit Program’s achievements over the past years. The council members reviewed the program’s impact on energy conservation, with particular emphasis on AC systems, lighting, building structures, and rooftop solar power installations. Dubai has set an ambitious target of retrofitting 30,000 buildings by 2030, aligning with its commitment to sustainable development.
During the meeting, the council also addressed the progress made in retrofitting government buildings to improve their energy and water efficiency. Since the program’s inception in 2015, a remarkable 8,000 buildings, including 7,791 government structures, have undergone retrofitting.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the DSCE, highlighted the council’s dedication to clean and renewable energy in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The meeting showcased various initiatives and strategies aimed at achieving net-zero carbon emissions and establishing a low-carbon economy. Notable strategies discussed included the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aim to derive 100% of Dubai’s power from clean sources by 2050.
Al Tayer further emphasized the positive impact of energy conservation programs and projects, which have resulted in a significant reduction in carbon emissions. In 2022 alone, Dubai achieved a remarkable 19% reduction, reflecting the effectiveness of solar energy integration, enhanced operational efficiency in various sectors, and waste recycling initiatives.
The meeting also celebrated the DSCE’s achievement of the ISO 50001:2018 certification for its energy management system. This recognition highlights the council’s commitment to promoting energy efficiency and incorporating responsible energy consumption practices. The DSCE has adopted a comprehensive approach to continuously improve energy performance across its facilities and assets, contributing to a sustainable green economy.
As Dubai continues its journey towards sustainability, the DSCE remains at the forefront of driving energy-efficient initiatives. Through the Building Retrofit Program and other strategic measures, the council aims to create a greener and more environmentally conscious city.
